Jay O'Toole Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 Is there a love of meter fine that helps the tongue to walk? I love to share this love of mine and pleasantly to talk. 'Tis true I-amb in metric form, when write this lilting way. The words be few or verbose storm when much I have to say. Would thank thee much for reading this short ditty quickly writ For poetry's the land of Bliss, when words are quick of wit. by Jay O'Toole on June 27th, 2017 Quote
Tinker Posted June 27, 2017 Posted June 27, 2017 Wow, Welcome Jay, Nice intro. This made me smile. I've actually been working unsuccessfully on a poem about the rhythm of speech that has been tickling the back of mind for some time. And here comes you with this delightful piece .... I amb so happy to see you here and love your first offering. Looking forward to reading more. ~~Tink Quote ~~ © ~~ Poems by Judi Van Gorder ~~ For permission to use this work you can write to Tinker1111@icloud.com
Jay O'Toole Posted June 27, 2017 Author Posted June 27, 2017 Thanks, Tink! Great encouragement! I love to have fun with my poetry, when & where I can. It's nice to see that you caught the "I amb" part. Quote
tonyv Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 Well, I happen to a fan of iambic meter, and the iambic meter in your ballad stanzas is impeccable. I remember reading in one of my books that James Wright (a personal favorite) and his contemporaries would have entire conversations in iambic pentameter. English being predominantly iambic it was that easy for them to volley iambic pentameters back and forth, more difficult to stray. Welcome to the forum. I'm pleased you made your way here. Jay O'Toole Posted July 9, 2017 Author Posted July 9, 2017 I agree, Tony. I have created threads like that on other websites. All responses had to be metered and rhyming. It was great fun! My English Literature teacher in high school (as I recall) said this. "If you find a poetic form that fits your personality, then you can write a poem as easily as you can write a friendly letter." I have found this to be true. Thank you for the complimentary response. Glad to be here. Quote
David W. Parsley Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 Include me with the welcomers, O'Toole. And may iambic lines refresh the school of memories that swim like darting sparks to lead us back to speak in rhyme-words full of whispers like soft gusts from childhood parks. - Dave Quote
Jay O'Toole Posted July 10, 2017 Author Posted July 10, 2017 Excellent! Thank you so much, David! Quote

Jay O'Toole Posted July 11, 2017 Author Posted July 11, 2017 I agree, Tony. I should have mentioned the iambic meter of Dave’s response. I noticed it as well. Nice touch, Dave! Quote
Michael Burton Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 I have a soft spot for the verb "lilt." I think its sound is rather descriptive. So, it was nice to see you use it in this work! Quote
Jay O'Toole Posted July 16, 2017 Author Posted July 16, 2017 Thanks, Michael! It is a fun word. Thanks for the encouraging comment. Quote
