Tinker
Milk Toast I hate the vile stuff. My Mom's favorite, She thought it a treat. My brother and I would cringe at the cacophony of the words, "I'll make you some milk toast." Pasty white bread that stuck to the roof of your mouth, barely browned and slathered with margarine that yesterday we squeezed in the plastic bag to make the red dot turn the white grease yellow to look like butter. A stingy sprinkle of sugar then torn into bite sized chunks, the toast was smashed into a glass to have warmed milk dumped on top. It turned into soggy, bland Gluck that disintegrated in your mouth and left a greasy film on your tongue. Just the other night my brother and I were laughing remembering Mama and her Milk Toast. ~~Judi Van Gorder Quote ~~ © ~~ Poems by Judi Van Gorder ~~ For permission to use this work you can write to Tinker1111@icloud.com
badger11
Hi Tink Ironic that so many sweet memories are made of such 'treats'. How often such a shared memory gathers warmth over the years. enjoyed badge
tonyv
Well, you don't make it sound very appetizing, @Tinker, lol. I doubt that I would try it! Tinker
I think it was a Depression thing. My Mom was a child of the Depression and it was a great treat her Mom gave her as a kid. When we were little she gave it to us a lot as an after school snack and I don't think she got it that we both hated it. We dutifully ate it and as we got older and fixed out own after school snacks we just silently eliminated it as an option. ~~Tink Quote ~~ © ~~ Poems by Judi Van Gorder ~~ For permission to use this work you can write to Tinker1111@icloud.com
