Sanctuary

Deep into the redwoods
and up the creek aways
is my sanctuary.
A secret space
where the silent forest
welcomes my prayers,
the giant trees lift
them to the heavens.

Where was the Poetry?

For two years I laid low.
First a world pandemic
then he suffered a stroke.
I hunkered down
to provide hospice
and finalize a career.

The world ignored.
Poetry put on hold.

I Prayed for Rain

So far, a stormy spring has sent
swift, swaying, branches, pot-holed roads,
flooded streets, submerged green-grass fields.
An atmospheric river flows.

The sunshine hides behind dark clouds,
birds stop singing while they cower
below dripping, new-growth foliage.
An atmospheric river flows.

Thirst of long drought still not quite quenched.
Yet Sierra's snow climbs higher
and reservoirs fill to the brim.
An atmospheric river flows.

I know He always answers prayer
and I am grateful for the rain,
though I'd not foreseen torrents termed,
an "atmospheric river flow".

in my grief

a brush of a touch
on my heaving shoulder
with no one there

a whisper hushed
into my ear, symphony
without music

a barren heart
emptied by loss
are you there?

Prompt: spirit or ghost

Today's Promise

A wash of baby blue, streaked
with snow-white trails
and gold-glittered beams
streaming down to the froth
of white-capped, sea-green curls
on vast display;
while bold brush strokes
arch rainbow hues
across today's canvas wall.

Prompt: Find a rainbow

 "make mankind in our image"

"Let us make humankind in our image,
according to our likeness, and let
them have dominion over the fish of
the sea, and over the birds of the air,
and over the cattle, and over all of
the wild animals of the earth, and
every creeping thing upon the earth."
                                                           Genisis 1:26

Everything in nature has a purpose, including me and you. I believe God inspired men of faith to record the oral tales passed down through time containing the truths of creation as best as early mankind could understand. These men of faith wrote in metaphor, parallels, poetry. Over centuries, it has been mankind's challenge to interpret or reject these writings. For me, the human condition is to find purpose in being.

planted seedlings grow
when fed and lightly watered
careless footsteps crush

live and love with hope
construct without destruction
protect those with eyes

"Plastic, paper, here"
compost blended with the earth
deep footprints erased

care for God's Earth
give hospice to God's children
"God saw it was good."*

I am a poet
I find joy in the details
I share my purpose
                   ~~Judi Van Gorder

* Genisis 1: at the end of verses 9,12,17,21,25,31
Prompt: Write about the human condition.

Maverick

We touch
and from the darkest depth
at the ocean’s floor
a rumbling, churning,
a tumbling, yearning,
begins climbing
         to the surface.

A frothy surging sea
builds to its crescendo
changing colors
along the way.
Ineffable as it hangs . . . .
until it can hang no more
then curls
         tumbles
                   and rolls
to crash upon the shore.
