The Haunting

Words replay in my mind,
I hear them clearly.
A moment's pause, a kinder phrase,
I could have said more, or less.
Too late, it's said, no rewrites now.
So why does it haunt me?

I tell myself, it's in the past.
We've made amends, life moved on,
and yet, I see, I hear,
that moment when . . . . .
again and again.

Agree with Juris, a poem with which many will relate to their own life experiences, including me. There is an impulse to rewrite, as if rehearsing better outcomes, but it is fiction. The reality is fact.

A lovely introspective poem, summing up well what caring, considerate people feel when they realize something could have been better said. Our second-thoughts on things are often a gift, and yes, time passed, is sometimes haunting. I used to think that everyone was introspective and it was a surprise to me that isn't the case. And so I value it more when found in others. Thanks for posting and done so well, poetically.
