April 20 #2 - Ruffles in Cotton

Ruffles in Cotton

Momma made it,
         a cotton sunsuit
with blue and yellow flowers
and a fancy ruffled border.

Summer 1946, Age 5,
         on a playground
in Grass Valley CA.
Some stupid boys
laughed at my ruffles.
Girly, girly, girly!

I'd show them, I climbed
         the high wooden slide
and on the way down
a huge splinter impaled
the back of my hand,
but I did not, would not, cry.
I still carry the scar.
