Lessons We Failed to Learn Before The Eclipse

Con/Jur/d, 4/3/2024

“Free your mind of the idea of deserving, the idea of earning,

and you will begin to be able to think” - Ursula Le Guin, The Dispossessed

Too many complications

in the dream where we didn’t

finish

our plans for using

The Moon’s Shadow

to fly

(Until, today, although the unfinished,

appeared to be the

DAY RESIDUE

taking the brunt of our attention, the

HANGED MAN

whose hatted outline hung suspended

above the absented light circle, a circumference

of glowing lunarity, with the dry stone tang of impossibly

cold rocks, should have immediately suggested, to us

upon re-arrival here, the

                                       Upcoming Solar Eclipse

the words had yet to illuminate themselves as we)

were interrupted by living

voices complaining,

don’t start a poem with a quote

do something original, don’t become

an airport ghost, where despite the assaults

on dignity and desire, we haunt

a certain bland immortality, for the privilege

of penetrating the winds, as if

for a moment we were

awkward and dull

birds. Last night at the hospital

insisted we should choose

how we live this eclipse

since we can reasonably expect

         it   to be

our last

and to ignore

The Apocalypse Carnies,

barking,

“This will last! This will last!”

when we know with the same certainty

of how day will become night and

we will be returning,

our shadows

cease casting

and we

            will resume

                               flying

once more.

This saddened me.  The last time I will see a total eclipse.   This is probably very true and to be denied another chance, knowing it will reoccur without me.  Something to not be ignored.   This poem has my brain jumping all over the place.  I'm glad it ended as it did. It felt free.
